Grok API Key Leak Exposes xAI Models to Major Security Risks

What Happened: A Department of Government Efficiency staffer accidentally exposed a sensitive API key linked to xAI’s Grok in a public GitHub repository. This leak grants access to at least 52 of xAI’s large language models.

On July 13th, an employee from the Department of Government Efficiency unintentionally committed a script titled “agent.py” to a public GitHub repository, leaking a valid Grok API key in the process
Contained within the code was a private API key granting access to xAI’s LLM systems. Although the script was subsequently taken down, the API key remains active.
This incident is not without precedent. Earlier this year, another xAI internal API key was exposed on GitHub for nearly two months. That leak potentially compromised access to LLMs and sensitive internal data associated with SpaceX, Tesla, and Twitter/X.

The exposed Grok API key may have granted unrestricted access to xAI’s underlying models—posing a critical risk to national security and enterprise AI integrity. If exploited, such access could enable:
